The San Francisco Department of Health hires numerous city employees to check the credentals of physicians at San Francisco General Hospital. Annual salaries(excluding benefits) for these employees run from $55,000 for a specialist to $75,000 for an analyst to $108,000 for a director. These positions are not related to direct patient care and the work of checking credentials of physicians can be done for a fraction of the money by coputerized private Credentials Verfication Organizations (CVO) in California who charge by the number of physician applications processed with no need for salaries, benefits or pensions. All of the information needed to process these physicians is available through web based subscription services. Why is this option of outsourcing non-patient care appointment and resppointment processing of physicians not being considered? The enormous amount of money saved could be applied directly to patient care.
