I don’t argue with the fact that black people have suffered terribly at the hands of white people and people of all colors. Sadly, all cultures have a history of treating each other poorly, whether in Chicago or in Africa before any Europeans arrived. Just as Europeans killed each other from the beginning of time, Native Americans slaughtered each other before Europeans arrived. Genocidal, black on black, African wars pre-date the rise of Europe by thousands of years.

The antidote for these problems that curse all of mankind is forgiveness and mutual respect. Dehumanizing people by calling them names doesn’t help; it perpetuates the cycle of disrespect and violence.

How much more effective would the message be if Mr. Hampton Jr. reached out to the family of Mr. Hanrahan in an effort to reconcile? Are Mr. Hanrahan’s granchildren demonic, barbaric, sadistic, etc. just because they are white? I know from first hand experience that they have many dear black friends, thank God, and see racism as a terrible sin.
