Thank you for your irresponsible "Journalism" that assumes you know the motives of everybody you don't agree with, truly a "style of writing characteristic of material in newspapers and magazines, consisting of direct presentation of facts or occurrences with little attempt at analysis or interpretation" or is that a definition of "gentrification journalism" created by "the Zionists." Why don't you or your newspaper clearly label your pieces as commentary, or opinion, or do you just assume all the views you hold, and your perspective of the world to be fact. Have you taken a critical thinking class, I can suggest a great one at the Peralta Collges.

My name is Ricky Powell and I was born, raised, and stayed in the Bay View for over 40 years until I was recently forced out to Pittsburgh. I don't think this is a "masterpiece." In fact, I think this is a piece that prioritizes commentary over real reporting that holds the power elite accountable --- not just these granola eating white people in the Bay Area.

For the brother who wrote this article, answer me these questions: Who's funding these new gentrification journalism projects? Who's on the boards of these corporations or foundations? What other financial ties do these board members have? What connections can you draw between these board members and their ownership of property in and around Oakland and San Francisco? How many LOI's have been sent by these gentrification journalism outlets and these foundations and corporations? Exactly how much money are these corporations giving to these outlets, versus how much they're taking away from schools in our communities?

These are the questions I want answered. This is the information I find important.

I don't care about your petty personal disputes, and I'm sad that these editors and publishers allow you to use this paper to continually wine about your personal problems. You had trumped up charges put against you by the police? You had something bad written about you in the paper? Somebody tried to buy you off? That happens every damn day, and it's not news to me. I got a 28-year-old son serving a life sentence in San Quentin; I could care less about your problems.

You call yourself the minister of information, so start informing. Otherwise, call yourself the minister of commentary, because that's what you seem to do best is comment. We don't need a block report to tell us what happens on the block because WE LIVE THERE. Stop bringing marbles to a damn gun fight, because you know what? We're in a WAR.

FIVE STARS, JR! This is truly a masterpiece, and maybe a post-empathy exercise for all of the authentically-challenged would-be writers to search their souls more. With this article, you may have deconstructed the entire so-called "power of the press" and turned it into "power of the PEOPLE press." Case in point, poor people's voices.

It's obvious Rocket doesn't get Lovelle Mixon at all. Mixon wasn't a saint, but he wasn't a monster either, just another Black man who did his time in prison and discovered he had very little chance of being treated fairly after doing his time. The CA prison system is overcrowded, has been ordered to let non-violent prisoners go, and it and the Governator play endless games resisting releasing anyone. Of course, if they did, that would just put so many more hundreds or thousands of Lovelle Mixons out on the streets competing (for jobs they'll never get) with everyone else who's been downsized, laid off, foreclosed, etc etc etc

All that said, there's a new gentrification journalism playah in San Francisco. The Bay Citizen, with a FIVE MILLION DOLLAR budget straight from Warren Hellman. It's on facebook, it's at 126 Post in the you-know-what part of town. So they've got San Francisco covered, from downtown to the Mission to...

Interesting supposition. I particularly enjoyed your presentation of opinion as fact. It's clear that what you don't know, like or agree with you fabricate to support your own particular view.

While I agree that Main Stream Media coverage of Black & Brown communities is frequently vacuous and shallow at best , this can this can just as easily be said of anything they cover. It is, at best, irrelevant to what is really happening in our communities.

Why is that you never write of the need for accountability within our own community ? You write as though everything negative in in Black & Brown communities is perpetrated upon us rather than the result of all too common incidences of Black on Black/ Brown on Brown violence in our very midst .

Our continued failure to repudiate these crimes contributes to the ambivalence of the broader community and I am afraid ,society as a whole. I believe the common attitude to be " if they don't care, why should we?"

These attitudes are further cemented by the suggestion of conspiracy theories and outright mis-representation of facts.
Your Black Muslim Bakery is out of business because it was co-opted by Yusef Bey IV and became a criminal enterprise. In the absence of government grants, it failed. It was not a viable business. ( Yes I know you are now drawing Wall St. comparisons. While this is certainly valid it cannot not serve as an excuse for YBMB)
Finally, mentioning Lovell Mixon in the same sentence as Chauncey Bailey and Oscar Grant is unconscionable. It implies that his death was unprovoked and every bit as tragic Grants or Baileys. IT WAS NOT and he will not be missed.

We must accept accountability and seize the responsibility that is rightfully ours. Only then will we become masters of our own destiny and truly prosper.

Peace,

There are so many distortions and Inaccuracies woven into what could be an otherwise interesting argument for who gets funding in the new journalistic landscape, that you do a disservice to your readership and to the craft.

JR's Piece for the San Francisco Bay View about Apartheid Journalism and how hyper local web journalism willfuly enables gentrification is nuanced and most importantly, honest. He doesn't back out of issues that should be expressed publicly about this issue. I can't say that for a lot of Black journalists out there. I think that one exception is Kwan Booth who wrote a lengthy reply to Oakland Local head Susan Mernit's article. He too is to be commended for raising some real issues about how these new "hyper-local" journalists act as if there is a level playing field in terms of funding for their projects when they know that it isn't true.
