For someone w an apparent Russian surname to talk about gangsterism, pimping & drug running... How many notorious Russian gangs are there? In Israel it's said that Russian gangsters now largely control Israel's prostitution & international trafficking in women, drugs & counterfeiting.
Furthermore what happened between Stalin & Trotsky - didn't Stalin put a hit out on his ex-comrade?? [how many purges & disappearances took place under Lenin & Stalin]?? And NO I'm NOT being Politically Correct!

There was no need to reinvent or humanize Malcolm X. His autobiography was honest and no one has ever thought of him as without faults. Mr. Marable could have used his time much better.

I agree with most of what Abdul laid out. However, I disagree with the theoretical frame--"revolutionary nationalism." Malcolm certainly made lots of references to revolution, socialism, and nationalism but he was not a Marxist. This does not necessarily nullify a Marxist critique but it does, I believe, point to some limitations. I think the limitation of Abdul's critique reflects a general tendency of the black left to concede too much of our theoretical labor to dead white men. So, for example, in Abdul's essay we are forced to keep a formal Marxist definition of "dialectical materialism" in our heads to fully grasp his analysis. To that I say that our Ancestors did not wait around for Marx to exploit contradictions inherent in the system of white domination, rather they creatively exploited them to their own revolutionary ends. All that to say I think we need to revisit the history and practice of black/Afrikan struggle with the aim of working out African-centered theories (i.e. theories based on our concrete practices) on revolutionary change. kzs

Malcolm-X street hustler, drug dealer and leader of a gang of thieves in Roxbury and Harlem, went to prison where he joined violent cult of pedophile Muhammad became anti-Semite and racist .
One in the long line of Black African American demagogues that convinced Black African Americans that all their misery because of the white" blue eyed devil " not because of their own laziness, stupidity and violence. This way he contributed to violence, misery and degradation of Africans in America. Malcolm-X was Killed by his own Muslim buddies. Became God in the Pantheon of Political Correctness

Thank you for a most enlightening article.

I agree with the writer that many current biographies misdirect readers from discovering the truth about their subjects-- and what the truth can teach us.

Who was Malcom X? I think this song tells us in a beautiful way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=93txi215oFw

A superb essay! One quibble: "Israel" is described as a "client" of the US. James Petras in his book "The Power of Israel in the United States" (Clarity Press Atlanta 2005) and subsequent work has extensively documented that the patron/client relationship is really the other way around.

This is most interesting, informative, and insightful. I questioned Marable's book and its purpose both publicly and privately in my home town. I even have a copy of it and tried to read it but had to put it aside to read what I considered were more authoritative biographies about other authentic but oft-little-known, African (Black) freedom fighters, such as Paul Robeson and Robert F. Williams.

While I will pick the book up again, I will have your well-written words to consider when I do so. For many of the questions you raised regarding the late Dr. Marable's book about "our Black shining prince" Malcolm X, I, too, as a child of the 1960s, the son of a documented Civil Rights Movement foot soldier whose still fighting for our/African people's rights, and a life-long student of what my grandmaster teachers, like Dr. John Henrik Clarke and Dr. Josef Ben Jochannan and John G. Jackson, among others, properly call "African World History".

Thank you, brother. Keep writing and informing.
