San Francisco – One Degree (www.1deg.org) is a San Francisco-based tech startup that is using technology to connect low-income families to resources they need to overcome poverty. One Degree is also a nonprofit organization harnessing the power of the most innovative web technology to make a substantial difference in the lives of people living below the poverty line.
With thousands of options for social services in San Francisco and no way to sift through them practically, families are stuck navigating a complicated safety net. Dubbed a “Yelp for social services,” One Degree helps people find the best and most relevant nonprofit services in every San Francisco neighborhood, just like you would find the best restaurant or gym.
Growing up in a working class immigrant family, Rey Faustino wanted to empower low-income families so that they do not struggle the way his family struggled. “I started One Degree to make it really easy for families to access the critical, life-saving services they need, like food banks, health clinics, housing and after-school programs. It’s the best place for families to find, track and share information about the resources offered in the community.”
As more and more low-income families adopt smartphone usage, One Degree gives them the tools to climb the ladder of opportunity and navigate through the complex web of social services. “There are so many nonprofit, social and governmental programs out there, but families are still slipping through the cracks. One Degree wants to be the connective tissue that brings people in need with the services they need.”
One Degree currently lists hundreds of nonprofit services that are located all over the city, including Bayview Hunters Point, with services that assist working class families and many others living below the poverty line. Find the community resources near you at www.1deg.org.
