It is with deep regret that I announce I am stepping down as editor of the SF Bay View newspaper. I stepped into the position with a great vision, no financial support and a host of challenges. Primarily speaking, without financial support there is very little that could really be done. I exhausted my personal savings as well as allowed my own production company and sole means of financial support to nearly crumble.

The toll on me has been more than financial. It has been emotional. I stand on the front lines of this movement to uplift the voices of those most marginalized, disenfranchised and underrepresented. Daily I watch, almost helplessly, as younger generations are swept away and set up for the same fate of imprisonment. For years I have watched others work so diligently to save our community from corporate and government greed only to lose their own to the streets.

Yes, I know that sacrifices must be made, but as a wise man once told me years ago, “If you can’t take care of you, you can’t take care of your own. And if you can’t take care of your own, then there is very little that you can do for someone else.”

I made a promise to myself years ago. I promised that I would never forsake my children again. I promised that I would stay in the struggle until my last breath. And I promised to never forget where I came from. Half of my life has been spent inside prison walls so there are things that I can never forget. And after all is said and done, I am left with an overwhelming need to balance health and strength with vision and purpose.

It is with deep regret that I announce I am stepping down as editor of the SF Bay View newspaper.

I will share more in the upcoming months and will keep you aware of my continued efforts to work for change. But for now, please accept my humble departure as editor of the SF Bay View newspaper.

I leave with gratitude to Willie and Mary Ratcliff for the opportunity to sit at the helm of an historic paper that continues to work so hard for people. I am sending big love and respect to all those I have worked with over the past months. Thank you for your support.

With that said, it should be known that the SF Bay View is in dire need of financial support. I urge you that if there is something you can do to support the paper, please do so.
