Pack the Board Chamber Monday, May 14, 1:30 p.m., at City Hall to demand full retesting and cleanup of the entire shipyard site!

After years of ignoring the well documented allegations of fraud and improper cleanup of the radioactive and toxic contaminated Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Superfund site, the Board of Supervisors will finally hold a public hearing on the issue. The Board’s Land Use and Transportation Committee hearing will be Monday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to attend this important hearing and to join community and environmental justice groups to demand:
- Comprehensive sampling and testing of the entire Shipyard site including parcels that have been transferred to the City and Lennar-Five Point. Testing must be conducted with independent community oversight.
- A thorough and comprehensive cleanup of the radioactive and toxic waste to prevent contamination from entering our community and the Bay, addressing the threat to the contamination site due to rising sea levels as a result of climate change.
- Cancellation of plans to build homes at the Shipyard due to the widespread contamination and due to the government’s reckless plan to leave large amounts of radioactive and toxic contamination at the site.
Decades of industrial and military activities, including reckless handling of residue from atomic bomb tests, left the site heavily contaminated. The Shipyard was placed on the US EPA’s national Superfund list in 1989, confirming it is one of the nation’s most contaminated sites.
After years of ignoring the well documented allegations of fraud and improper cleanup of the radioactive and toxic contaminated Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Superfund site, the Board of Supervisors will finally hold a public hearing on the issue.
For years the Bayview Hunters Point community was assured by city, state and federal agencies that the cleanup was going well as they pushed plans for over 10,000 mostly upscale homes to be built there. The government tried ignoring information provided by whistleblowers who stated that massive fraud in the cleanup was committed by the federal contractor Tetra Tech.
Tired of being polluted and ignored, the community never gave up trying to get the truth out. Longtime community residents, the Bay View newspaper, Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice, Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates, the Mothers and Fathers Committee, the Golden Gate University Environmental Law and Justice Clinic, Our City, whistleblowers and other allies kept demanding that our government investigate the allegations of fraud – and we succeeded.

Today, city, state and federal agencies all agree that evidence indicates Tetra Tech may have committed massive fraud on an unprecedented scale. On Dec. 27, 2017, US EPA Region IX Superfund Manager John Chesnutt wrote to the Navy to inform them what EPA, state Department of Toxic Substances Control and the California Department of Public Health concluded after reviewing two parcels that make up about 40 percent of the Shipyard site: “In summary, the data analyzed demonstrate a widespread pattern of practices that appear to show deliberate falsification …”
