Robert Chrisman and the internationally acclaimed The Black Scholar journal (TBS) are principle beacons of achievement and hope within the movement to create Black Studies departments and ultimately Ethnic Studies and Women’s Studies departments. Chrisman and The Black Scholar occupied the vanguard of the struggle for recognition of Black Studies as a serious academic endeavor.

It is time for all the staff and listeners to embrace the democratic victory that was won for us in legal and street battles of 1999-2001 and by the people who formed the original “Save KPFA” in the mid-1990s. KPFA was not sold from under us, and thanks to their efforts, it never will be. It is time to bring peace to KPFA and Pacifica and help strengthen this priceless resource.

Since 1949, KPFA has been bringing incisive political analysis, vital cultural perspectives, and an amazing variety of music to the Bay Area and beyond. To keep KPFA responsive to community needs, the station needs community participation, and one of the ways to participate is to vote in the board elections.

But ILWU member Clarence Thomas says: “We don’t cross community picket lines. These ports are the people’s ports. Ports belong to the people of the Pacific Coast.”

“On April 4, when working people across this country demonstrated in solidarity with the Wisconsin state workers, the longshore workers of Local 10 in San Francisco did what they’ve always done … the ports of San Francisco and Oakland were shut down in solidarity … Now the employers’ group … is trying to put an end to workers’ solidarity actions by intimidating the longshore union through a court suit.” – Trent Willis. Reverse images: The acrimonious debate on race in Cuba

Recently the cold war against Cuba was ratcheted up when an acrimonious debate broke out over the issue of racism in Cuba and for the first time the issue of Brazil was thrown into the mix. The brouhaha began when scores of prominent African Americans, many of whom should have known better, put their names to a petition calling upon the Cuban government to release a dissident from prison.

Four San Francisco labor activists arrested at BofA in support of Chicago factory occupation

A sit-in and protest was held in San Francisco on Dec. 9 as an act of solidarity with workers who have been sitting in since Dec. 5 at the Republic Windows and Doors factory in Chicago. Four people were arrested at a downtown San Francisco office of Bank of America.
