Californians urged to sign up for health insurance as Jan. 31 enrollment deadline nears

That’s the message Covered California officials are broadcasting across the state, encouraging residents to apply for health insurance before open enrollment ends Jan. 31. “We’re still open for business, and we want every eligible Californian to enjoy the protection and security that comes with having health insurance for themselves and their families,” Covered California Executive Director Peter V. Lee said.

New study shows Covered California consumers saving and paying much less than expected for quality health care coverage – deadline Jan. 20

A new independent study by The Commonwealth Fund found Covered California consumers are protecting themselves from rate changes and paying much less than the average price of plans by shopping for the best value. The study looked at the policies Covered California consumers purchased between 2014 and 2016 and found the average price paid in each year has been between 11 and 15 percent less than the average price of the plans offered.

Covered California estimates hundreds of thousands of Californians face increased tax penalty if they go without health insurance in 2016

Covered California is reminding consumers that time is running out to avoid the increased tax penalty for those who do not have health insurance in 2016, and the exchange is encouraging Californians without coverage to explore their options and sign up to avoid a big tax bill. The deadline to sign up for a health insurance plan that starts on Feb. 1 is Friday, Jan. 15. Open enrollment runs through Jan. 31, and anyone signing up between Jan. 16 and Jan. 31 will have their health care coverage start on March 1.

Covered California has released a list of the top areas in the San Francisco Bay Area where high numbers of people who qualify for subsidized health insurance are believed to reside. The “hot spots” released today show the estimated highest concentrations of subsidy-eligible uninsured individuals – people who qualify for help to buy health insurance through Covered California but have not yet taken advantage of it.

Increased African-American enrollment is key goal in Year 3 of Affordable Care Act

Covered California is in the third year of helping millions of Californians gain health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. Still, hundreds of thousands of Californians don’t have insurance – many of whom are African-Americans. With that in mind, Covered California has launched a new marketing and outreach effort to boost African-American enrollment, emphasizing financial assistance available to help consumers pay for insurance coverage.
