Unjustified imprisonment and torturous living conditions have prisoners hunger striking all over the world. Many people who read the Bay View on the regular are aware of the California prison hunger strike, which has been going on for over a month now and started with over 30,000 prisoners statewide participating. But many know nothing about another prison hunger strike that is going on simultaneously on a U.S. military base in Cuba.

Prison-wide hunger strike still rages at Guantánamo

People will die unless action is taken to bring the hunger strike at Guantánamo to an end, and President Obama needs to stir himself from his torpor and act to bring to an end the disgraceful situation whereby prisoners cleared for release by the government may be imprisoned for the rest of their lives because it has proven to be politically inconvenient to release them.

An M.I.T. undergraduate and Brandeis Ph.D. who spent her time researching ways to improve child behavior, Dr. Aafia Siddiqui was recently found guilty in New York City of coming from behind a curtain that hid her, stealing a U.S. soldier’s M-4 rifle, and firing the rifle at but missing and then assaulting a U.S. military team.
