Freedom and Movement Center celebrates its first anniversary Aug. 31

On Saturday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., come to the Freedom and Movement Center, 4400 Market St. at 44th in North Oakland. Join LSPC (Legal Services for Prisoners With Children) and All of Us or None for a celebration of community on the first anniversary of the opening of the center.

Our Formerly Incarcerated Quest for Democracy (Q4D) Day continues to grow and evolve. This year we had over 250 committed people. We had around 30 teams advocating on legislation relevant to formerly incarcerated people and our communities. Grassroots co-sponsors got a chance to educate community members about their bills. And Sen. Holly Mitchell as well as Assemblymembers Reginald Jones-Sawyer and Autumn Burke addressed participants.

Formerly Incarcerated People’s Policy Academy launches in Los Angeles

Typically we don’t show up to the fight until several of us have been shot. We don’t show up early on not because we don’t care, but because in general we don’t know how. That’s why Legal Services for Prisoners with Children (LSPC) is establishing a policy academy to increase civic participation by formerly incarcerated people, both locally and statewide. Our first training drew 50 people to the Watts Labor Center in Los Angeles.
