SF Public Defender Jeff Adachi launches unit to combat booking bias

Police booking charges play an outsized role in creating the San Francisco justice system’s dramatic racial disparities, a new study reveals, prompting San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi to announce today the formation of a team to scrutinize the early charges for bias. The Pretrial Release Unit, comprised of two deputy public defenders and one investigator, will launch Oct. 1. The team will intervene between arrest and arraignment to ensure cases have not been overcharged.

More than 2,000 people eager to get a jump on the school year flocked to BMAGIC’s (Bayview Mobilization for Adolescent Growth in our Communities) Bayview Hunters Point Back to School Celebration at Youngblood Coleman Park Aug. 15, where kindergartners through high school seniors received new backpacks, uniforms and school supplies. The event is among the largest and most comprehensive of its kind in the Bay Area.

Public defender releases racial justice recommendations, finds up to 1,000 cases may be tainted by bigoted officers

An estimated 1,000 criminal cases will be reviewed following revelations that San Francisco police officers regularly shared racist and homophobic views in text messages, San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi announced today. Adachi also released a 10-point plan to increase police transparency and safeguard citizens against racial bias.

Bayview residents, organizations to restore Youngblood Coleman Park

On June 26, a group of committed residents kicked off a campaign to restore Youngblood Coleman Park to its former glory. On the first of what will be many planned service days, residents toured the park, brainstormed ideas for public art and children’s activities and learned about the area’s history.

People charged with drug offenses in San Francisco may have their cases dropped or convictions overturned due to alleged evidence tampering and substandard conditions in the police crime lab, San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi announced Wednesday. Those arrested prior to 2008, however, may never be able to get a fair trial, since all drug evidence has since been destroyed.

Youth to celebrate a year of accomplishment at BMAGIC 5th Annual Winter Ball

BMAGIC’s 5th Annual Winter Ball on Friday, Dec. 18, at the Joseph Lee Recreational Center, 1395 Mendell St., San Francisco, is the event that youth in Bayview Hunters Point have been waiting for. All youth ages 14-18 in Bayview Hunters Point are invitedto celebrate the end of the year and take pride as their accomplishments are recognized and honored. Free admission to the formal includes DJ and dancing, dinner and professional photos. Teens who show up in street clothes will change into formal wear and keep the clothes they select.
