Seven Bayview businesses that powered through the pandemic

Survival-thrival successes on Bayview’s Third Street in the pandemic era seem driven by writer Meaghan Mitchell’s lifetime mantra based on the African proverb: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

A look at the Bay View’s fabulously successful 2020 fundraiser!

A spectacular simultaneously real and virtual party/fundraiser lifted the love and light on Nov. 20-21, 2020 in the Bayview community! The SF Bay View editor’s torch was passed by Mary and Willie Ratcliff to Malik Washington who, along with Wanda Sabir and new managing editor Nube Brown and so many others, remembered the ancestors and highlighted art, dance, music, food, interviews, homegrown business and voices from the community.

Merchants of Butchertown

Decades ago, when cattle were driven north on Third Street to the area west of what is now Bayview Plaza, that neighborhood was called Butchertown. Like bygone Butchertown, the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood leads the city in ethnic and economic diversity. With Bayview’s small businesses, industries and its dedication to feeding the city, the spirit of Butchertown lives on. Today, a community group of local businesses calls itself the Merchants of Butchertown (MOB).

Business owners declare Third Street an African American Cultural District

Designated cultural districts in San Francisco are becoming increasing popular. One of the greatest strengths of a cultural district is that it is formed by the community. This is a very exciting opportunity for us in Bayview. Let’s begin an inclusive community engagement process to define our African American Cultural District in Bayview. You are cordially invited to begin the discussion and planning at the first Community Forum on the African American Cultural District. It’s Wednesday, March 21, 6 p.m., at the Bayview Opera House. Your input is welcome, wanted and needed!
