University of California’s disservice to the Bayview Hunters Point community

The review by the UC expert panel about retesting procedures for Parcel A and Parcel G in Hunters Point Shipyard, nine months after the report’s release, seems to have resulted in a stillbirth as there is no evidence of benefit to the parent Bayview Hunters Point (BVHP) community. Foul play is suspected.

Community calls on mayoral candidates to address the achievement gap

Community members and clergy from the Black, Latino, and Pacific Islander communities gathered in Southeast San Francisco on May 12 to ask candidates for Mayor what they plan to do about the city’s stark achievement gap for low-income students. Candidates Angela Alioto, Richie Greenberg, Amy Farrah Weiss and Ellen Lee Zhou heard from parents who spoke of their frustration with the lack of opportunities afforded to their children and the inequities of the current school system.

A 20-year vision became reality when Bayview Senior Services invited the people of Bayview Hunters Point to the grand opening of the Dr. George W. Davis Senior Center and Residence on Saturday, June 25. The celebration marked the victory of a dream over despair. As we all gain inspiration from his memory, his wife, Cathy Davis, has captained the project to a successful completion with last Saturday’s unforgettable grand opening.
