Baba Jahahara Amen-RA Alkebulan-Ma’at was recently honored by U.S. Congresswoman Barbara Lee and leaders of several cities in California, as well as his colleagues in the green solar industry, for his contributions and retirement. For the past four decades, Baba (Elder) Jahahara has played a key role in helping organize independent and uplifting campaigns for human rights; neighborhood improvements; labor, prisoner and environmental justice; and youth empowerment efforts across the United States and around the African continent and Diaspora.

Congresswoman Lee said the following: “We recognize Jahahara … for his (40-plus) years of faithful and honorable service to the communities of Chicago, Kansas City, New York City and the San Francisco Bay Area … His commitment to promoting social justice, workers’ rights and economic equality has set a fine example for all.”

Over the years, Baba Jahahara has also authored several books and published hundreds of articles and columns in newspapers and magazines in the U.S. and internationally, including the San Francisco Bay View. In addition, he has become well-respected as a passionate advocate and organizer in the righteous call for self-determination and reparations for African nations and ascendants worldwide; for the abolition of the for-profit prison industry; as well as a composer, singer and producer of 11 albums and CDs; and a public artist, including the “Abundant Knowledge” mural at Marcus (Garvey) Books, the oldest African-owned bookstore in the U.S., based in Oakland, California.

Baba Jahahara is honored March 3 by Oakland City Council President Lynette Gibson McElhaney.

He has presented to, been featured in and/or performed at venues as diverse as the United Nations to the U.S. Congress, Madison Square Garden to Oprah Winfrey Show, New York Times to The Final Call and many, many more.
