Engaged to Sumiko Saulson from 2008 to 2015, Greg helped his fiancé with her writing career by doing sales and consignments to get her books into bookstores. He also volunteered with Iconoclast Productions, passing out fliers and helping organize events. When he lived in Oakland from 2009 to 2015, he was very active in the local community as a part of the Melrose High Hopes NCPC Beat27x. He was well liked by neighbors and had many friends in Oakland and San Francisco.

Greg loved cats and was known as an animal lover. In addition to feline adoption, Greg fostered cats awaiting adoption in his community. He was a proud member of the Juggalo community, the Gothic community and the Church of Bast.

He was predeceased by his parents, Dianne and Leonard Hug.

He’s survived by his two cats, Bootsy Catlins and Marla Mewpaws; his brothers, Larry Hug and Robert Hug; his sister, Jessica Hug; mother-in-law, Carolyn Saulson; brother-in-law, Scott Saulson; nieces, Trinity Hug, Sissy Hug, Franchesca Saulson (and her fianceé Vee Tulau), Elisabetta Maria Saulson; and nephew, Joshua Andrakin.

Greg Hug was diagnosed with HIV in 2015 and became depressed towards the end of his life, especially after losing both of his parents in 2016. He died of a drug overdose. We ask that people make a donation to AIDS Walk San Francisco (team: SFGoth) in lieu of sending flowers. His memorial service took place June 24, 2017, at the Octopus Literary Salon in Oakland.
