Kevin Epps’ Moms celebrates her birthday with her son and grandchildren, Kevin and his “Epps kids.”

by Kevin Epps

It has been three months since my last court appearance, and because community support has made such a difference for my case, I wanted to send a reminder about my upcoming hearing for those who can take the time to come out and support me. My next appearance is scheduled at the Hall of Justice in San Francisco:

Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2019, 9:00 a.m., at 850 Bryant St. in Department 20.

I sincerely want to thank everyone for the support and love that helped make it possible for me to spend the last four months with my family and friends as well as to be able to be active and present in the community. As I reflect on the past four months, I wanted to take some time and share how I have been doing since my release.

I’ve been keeping myself busy, with a focus on being productive. I’ve been working and spending quality time with family, friends and engaging myself in the community.

I’ve been looking after Moms and eating home cooked food, daily. I also had a surprise birthday gathering complete with cake and ice cream – thanks, Moms!

I feel grateful that most of what I have been doing has actually been therapeutic as it has been helping me to stay positive and keep my mind off of the unjust, malicious and very serious nature of the case I’m fighting.

In particular, the time I’ve been able to spend in the community has enabled me to have a renewed sense of purpose and zest for life. Some highlights that come to mind are:

– Meeting legendary rapper YoYo and others at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation event. I also met the celebrated Sterling James, KBLX radio personality and host. She was so nice, and meeting her was such a delight, especially as I’ve been hearing her voice on the airways for quite some time.

Supporters of the late, great SF Public Defender Jeff Adachi celebrate the Board of Supervisors’ renaming of a street Jeff Adachi Way. In the back row are Adachi’s successor, Public Defender Manu Raju, District 6 Supervisor Matt Haney and Kevin Epps.

– Being honored to attend and lend my voice at the street naming hearing for the late Public Defender, Jeff Adachi, at a San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting. In the resolution, Jeff is rightfully immortalized and described as having been “the voice, not only in San Francisco but across the country, for racial justice on behalf of the criminally accused.”

– Covering the NAACP Freedom Fund reception and gala with so many Beautiful Black People. This event was also a proud one for me as a father as I watched 9-year-old Kamari get bitten with the bug and pick up my camera. As I reflect on the love I have for my family, friends and community, I thought it was important to share what life has been for me since my release.
