With the U.S. economy turning a blind eye to unemployment in the Black community, it is on us to create business and employment opportunities for our community, and Taiwo Kujichagulia-Seitu and her collective of dedicated women, known as the Lyric Dance and Vocal Ensemble, have answered the call by opening the Lyric Performing Arts Academy in downtown Oakland.

‘Shortage of Children’ screens Saturday, June 16, in SF Black Film Fest

The film is in French with English subtitles and is set primarily in France, beginning in 1963. Two children from Reunion Island, a French colony that lies east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, were among 1,600 children from the island brought to France for forced adoptions by farmers to repopulate the countryside. Their mother gave them to a white couple who promised her they would make them doctors but in the end enslaved them.

Bayview resident the youngest to receive Peacemaker Award

On June 3, Da’Nille Lemon, a 14-year-old eighth grade student at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academic Middle School, will become the youngest recipient of Community Boards’ The Gail Sadalla Rising Peacemaker Award at their annual Peacemaker Awards. Bayview resident Da’Nille serves as the peer mediation project leader for the Restorative Mediation Program and participates in her school’s Peer Resources elective, a program that empowers youth to create just change.
