With courage and gratitude, this tribute to what was, transitioning to what is, brings celebration, tears of joy and sadness, inspiration, hope, hard work, and renewed raised-fist commitment to everyone connected in myriad ways to the icon that is the SF Bay View newspaper, serving so many, inside and outside.

It is a collective wound that keeps being opened by the racist killing machine of the police departments in our communities of Black and Brown people. We can stop the bleeding by standing up in our collective outrage for Grandma Addie’s Steven Taylor, and every new injustice and pain perpetrated upon another family in our community.

A spectacular simultaneously real and virtual party/fundraiser lifted the love and light on Nov. 20-21, 2020 in the Bayview community! The SF Bay View editor’s torch was passed by Mary and Willie Ratcliff to Malik Washington who, along with Wanda Sabir and new managing editor Nube Brown and so many others, remembered the ancestors and highlighted art, dance, music, food, interviews, homegrown business and voices from the community.

The fire is lit and the students of City College of San Francisco and their supporters are brilliantly adamant about what they will and will not accept in creating the futures they see for themselves and those who will follow. As stakeholders in the reformation of a deeply broken system, their vision is clear and their collective voice will be heard.

Code Tenderloin has been meeting the people where they are at for about seven years, providing day-to-day, real life, in the moment necessities to the community. Embodying a paradigm that at least emotionally eliminates the red tape, folks are receiving help without burden of shame and dehumanization. They’re getting love and compassion instead.

Assistant SF Bay View Editor Washington shines a bright light on the get-down commitment of Bayview Hunters Point native, Fathina Holmes, to get it done and create space for opportunities and second chances to become realized for people who look like her.

The ongoing reveal of the life-threatening contaminants plaguing the residents of the Bayview Hunters Point community was further enhanced by a recent virtual tour by Dr. Ahimsa Porter Sumchai and Dr. Mark Alexander imparting first-hand knowledge to attendees, including first-year UCSF medical students. Information focused on the toxic elements adding weight to the body burden as revealed by the biomonitoring program testing being done within the community.

As we continue to raise awareness and lift up our voices so that we may be heard on the issues of systemic racism and economic exploitation in the criminal justice system, as well as prison slavery and police killings and brutality, we continue to see an evil and determined enemy dig in its heels in the name of White Supremacy. In October 2017, it was reported that the Trump administration is seeking more immigration jails and detention facilities to house more immigrants that they plan to arrest.

Prisons are corporate entities. We can make the calls to End Prison Slavery and Amend the 13th all we want, but the fact remains that if we don’t organize around defunding the enterprise, nothing is going to change. The Campaign to Redistribute the Pain 2018 is more than just a boycott against prison contractors. It is more than just a call for the next salvo in the struggle to end slavery. It is, among other things, the next step in the process to forge our struggle into a national movement.
