Holman Prison guard calls prisoners ‘annoying insects that should be killed off the face of the earth’

The following photographs were leaked from inside Holman Prison. Photographs appear to be writings from a correctional officer’s composition book.

This composition book, apparently the property of Correctional Officer H. Coates, was found by prisoners after the recent rebellion.

The composition book allegedly had been left in an area of the prison that had been torched during recent unrest. The language is rough, as we have attempted to transcribe it exactly. We Photoshopped some of the photographs in order to enhance the handwriting and have also posted the original photos submitted.

Many of Alabama’s prisons and jails are in conflict from within. Reports have been circulating and received by us and others regarding alleged abuse of prisoners at the hands of corrections officers, basic life sustaining necessities limited in an attempt to control or break inmates.

Any caged animal consistently poked with a stick will eventually attack the one who pokes it. The United States Department of Justice has been called into Alabama on more than one occasion regarding its jails and prisons.

If Alabama expects productive citizens to emerge one day from its jails and prisons, perhaps more thought should be given as to how they are treated during incarceration. For to deliver angry, beaten, bloodied and starved prisoners who have given up on life at the doorstep of society upon release is to expect nothing short of conflict when these same prisoners attempt to redeem themselves and make a place of peace within society.

Were inmates rounded up by guards just prior to Gov. Bentley visiting Holman Prison this week and told to lie face down on the cement floor with guards pointing rifles at them and told “if you raise your head it will be shot off”? Bentley was in Holman Prison, it appears from several reports, for less than 15 minutes, solely for his photo op. Is it possible Alabama’s governor stopped by just for a toilet break?

Billingsly said about inmates are true they are animals if they can’t get something out of you your useless to them and you can be replaced or worse hurt. Inmates don’t even care about their family unless they can get something for nothing. I just found out that dirty ass officer told them I was bringing shit in. I would never ever give up my freedom or my life for some piece of shit inmate. It would kill me if I got in with …”

A phone call to Holman Prison confirmed H. (Howie) Coates is employed as a correctional officer.
