PONGEZI! CONGRATULATIONS to former Chair of the Black Panther Party Elaine Brown and the Oakland and the World Enterprises! As Founder and CEO, Ms. Brown has assembled and led her team through the planning and funding processes that will result in a major ground-breaking this November. This critical project will include 79 truly affordable homes for some of our residents who need it the most, including our formerly incarcerated and returning relatives. The location is on historic Seventh Street in West Oakland, on a city lot that had been vacant for decades. Shown with Elaine here are, from left, BART board member Lateefah Simon, Elaine and two Oakland A’s representatives on either side of Cathy Adams of the Oakland Black Chamber of Commerce. Africans Deserve Reparations! Cause, Black Lives Matter!

Blessings of IMANI (FAITH) Esteemed G-o-ds, Elders, Sis-Stars, Bro-Stars and Youthful Revolutionaries!

May our Divine Mother-Father Creator of and in All – and Beloved Ancients and Ancestors from millennia past, yesteryears and, literally, yesterday – find you and (y)our extended Family in positive and healing Spirit. As always, WE encourage you and yours to continue practicing proven measures for protection against both known and unknown robbers of our precious health and lives. Asé.

Leading off, please join with me in offering our warmest regards, highest respect and love to our dedicated editor of our Bay View, Queen Mother Nube Brown, as she celebrates her sacred Birthday, on 2 October. Asé.

Honoring a Few of Our New Ancestors

WE honor the recent Spiritual Transformations of … MONA LISA BRUCE II, recently murdered Granddaughter of our dear friend MONA LISA BRUCE I, who was also tragically murdered way back in 1976. Asé. THEODORE “TEDDY” STEWART, my high school and college classmate. Asé. MELVIN VAN PEEBLES, fiercely independent and ground-breaking producer of a number of films, including da-in-yo-face “Sweet Sweetback’s Badassss Song.” Asé.

And, actor, radical activist and ally ED ASNER, who supported many progressive causes. He spoke passionately at our “Millions for Mumia” sold-out event at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where i was honored to perform the finale with my song “WE SHALL NOT LET HIM DIE (Save and Free Mumia)!” in May 2000. Asé.

Our sympathies and solidarity are also with the victims and survivors of the deadly, mutating viruses which have sickened, killed and bankrupted so many of our families, businesses and institutions. And, to those thousands around the usa and world who have perished and/or are being forced to migrate due to the devastating rains and floods, droughts and wildfires, as well as imperialistic violence and chaos caused by the capitalist-corporate profiteer-induced system which is causing horrific climate chaos and environmental destruction. Asé.

Long Live the Spirit, legacies and numerous contributions of these new and All our incredible Ancients and Ancestors. Asé. Asé. Asé-O!

Much respect and love to the Black Panther Party!

The month of October 2021 is the 55th Year Anniversary of the founding of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, here in Oakland. Throughout October, a number of events are scheduled around our city to highlight the extraordinary vision and bravery of these once youthful change-makers, as well as their ongoing legacies.

Destination reparations

The State of California’s Reparations Task Force is mostly based on our federal legislation, H.R. 40 and S. 40, which our National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America (N’COBRA) envisioned, helped introduce first in 1989 and have championed over the past three decades plus.

Asante Sana (Many Thanks) to the residents of the newly named Palisades Tahoe California … for finally changing the insultingly racist and sexist name of European American settler colonizers of “Squaw Valley.” Asé. And, to residents of one of my former hometowns, the City of Chicago, for changing the name of Lake (Michigan) Shore Drive to JEAN BAPTISTE POINT DUSABLE Drive, after the African-Haitian founder of da Chi-town. ‘Bout damn time! Asé.
