Hey! If you enjoy a good love story, I’ve got a movie for you: “Sylvie’s Love.” It’s delightfully chocolate.

I fell in love with this film, a love story about a guy and a girl who are both Black. I highly recommend it as a Valentine’s treat. For African American lovebirds, the characters are human beings of depth and quality, displaying affection and tenderness – a normal expression of a man and a woman in a blossoming romantic relationship. This is rare light for us Blacks to be seen in.

The story takes place in Harlem during the mid-’50s and -’60s, a time when dating was more simplistic than today, making all of the lovely and inept shades of romance possible. The country was also experiencing a kind of parallel awkwardness of social and political changes during the same timeframe, inspiring the beauty of hope that many of us long to return to.

The very attractive Tessa Thompson is Sylvie and the boyish and handsome Nnamdi Asomugha is Robert. As actors, they breathe life into the characters. You might find yourself living vicariously through them, enjoying the lightheartedness of the moment that is so rare these days.

I believe a major asset about the making of this film is that many of the behind-the-scenes players are also Black. They felt a cultural responsibility to portray us with the dignity our humanity deserves. Written and directed by Eugene Ashe, the film’s stars, Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomugha, are two of the many producers.

Oh, I must say that the music is wonderful! It creates a lovely ambiance enhancing the film’s nostalgic climate.
