New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has the power to grant clemency to 76-year-old David Gilbert having served 40 years of a life sentence. Jerome Wright, now 12 years paroled, supports and promotes clemency for David Gilbert, whose mentorship inspired Wright towards a path of purpose in promoting something other than his own delinquent self.

The failure of both Congress and state legislatures to respond to the murder of George Floyd with any meaningful action reminds us that our nation’s attempts at reform can often amount to nothing. We need to look elsewhere for reform – to local prosecutors.

Today, San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin and Supervisor Shamann Walton announced a resolution motivated by the murder of George Floyd to protect the public and particularly people of color from police misconduct. The resolution urges the San Francisco Civil Service Commission to prohibit the San Francisco Police Department and San Francisco Sheriff’s Department from hiring officers with a known history of serious police misconduct. Supervisors Hillary Ronen, Aaron Peskin, Matt Haney, Dean Preston, Sandra Lee Fewer and Norman Yee are cosponsors of the resolution.

Adante Pointer Esq. is one of the legal warriors fighting the people’s fight for a long time in the streets and courtrooms of the Bay Area. I became aware of him during the Oscar Grant movement in 2009-2010. I remember he would be flanking John Burris, the Bay Area’s Johnnie Cochran in the courtroom, and at press conferences he would help explain the “legalese” to the media and public so people could understand what exactly happened in the courtroom.

In regard to racism, Black San Franciscans are worse off than ever before. Only by achieving goals that improve the lives of Black San Franciscans will there be anything to celebrate regarding racial equity in San Francisco.

The election of Chesa Boudin serves as a paradigm shift in what we have become accustomed to as criminal justice in Amerika. He is intimately familiar with the deleterious effect and collateral damage that lengthy prison sentences can have on the moral fabric of a family.

David Gilbert has paid a heavy price for his crime. Granting him clemency would allow him to contribute his many talents to his family, friends and the community at large, and his release would send a message of hope to the many elders serving lengthy sentences.

The outcome of the San Francisco DA race could change the criminal justice landscape in San Francisco. This open forum is the last chance for undecided voters to hear each candidate address issues that matter to them and their community.
