Black Graduation 2021 was a proud showcase of young people who stretched themselves with grit in the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic to proceed through the Rites of Passage ceremony with hearts full and heads held high.

More than 500 high school juniors and seniors from around the Bay Area convened at San Francisco’s Mission High School for the Seventh Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities Recruitment Fair. Dozens of students were admitted to schools on the spot while many walked away with merit-based scholarships. The annual fair provides students with an opportunity to get a head start in the college admissions process while learning about historically Black colleges and universities and seeing them as viable options.

Doctors and parents today declared a “candy flavored tobacco epidemic” in San Francisco and vowed to smash candy-flavored tobacco companies like SF-based JUUL that target kids with their addictive tobacco products. The declaration comes as R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Corporation is spending nearly $12 million in an effort to attack Proposition E, which upholds San Francisco’s restriction on the sales of candy flavored tobacco products.

SFUSD in collaboration with the San Francisco Alliance of Black School Educators will host the Fifth Annual Historical Black College and University (HBCU) Fair on Monday, Sept. 11, 2017, at Mission High School from 4:00-7:30 p.m. U-CAN President Alan H. Rowe says about last year’s fair that it drew a large number of students and parents districtwide. “The College Fair was an overwhelming success with many students receiving on-the-spot admissions and scholarship offers.”

Mark your calendars! The first Black Family Day of 2017 takes places on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2017. This event will be at Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School, 2055 Silver Ave. in the Bayview district. The goal of Black Family Day is to connect Black families to much needed resources and to capitalize on the leadership skills already present by giving them the skills needed to navigate public and private systems on behalf of their families. The focus of this event is reducing summer learning loss.
