Red Onion and Wallens Ridge prisons were built in the remote mountains of Virginia, where white guards’ treatment of Black prisoners is notoriously cruel and never punished. Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, a widely respected political prisoner, has been courageously reporting the abuse and prisoners’ responses, including self-immolation, and has so far survived the consequences. Support for him is growing, but more is needed.
