Obsidian Healing Camp is rejuvenating minds in deep West Oakland

A quarter-acre sanctuary in deep West Oakland is redefining what community healing can look like. Obsidian Healing Camp, a Black and Indigenous-owned collective, offers free and donation-based classes, cultural programming and wellness services—from yoga and sound healing to writing workshops, bike repair and a food bank—all rooted in a philosophy of collective healing and community care. JR Valrey speaks with the founders about the vision behind the camp, why Oakland was the natural home for it, and how they’re creating a welcoming space for healing, organizing and restoration.

Racism in San Francisco County Jail

In regards to the prison censorship issue, I am just chiming in to let it be known that it isn’t a “nudity” thing (the California Department of Corrections’ new censorship regulations are disguised under the title “Obscene Material” – ed.); it’s a Black-Latino thing, period! I’m not in prison, I’m in County Jail 5 in San Francisco, and it has even trickled down this far. Here we are not allowed to receive magazines that are most favored by Blacks or Latinos.
