Attorney Karima Al-Amin, wife of Imam Jamil Al-Amin, formerly known worldwide as H. Rap Brown, the voice of Black power, announced yesterday what has now been confirmed: “A caller to Florence ADX,” the dreaded federal maximum security prison in Colorado, she wrote, “was told today that Imam Jamil has been moved to Butner FMC (Federal Medical Center), North Carolina. I checked the inmate locator tonight, and the Imam is listed at Butner FMC, and not Florence ADX.”
A call this morning confirmed that good news – clearly the result of concerted pressure from people around the country and around the world – but that there was no word yet on his condition or whether he has yet received any medical care.
Sister Karima had begun to acknowledge the widespread public response when she wrote yesterday, “WURD and Brother Phil absolutely played a major role in moving folks and other media to take action, and we continue to thank you for all that you have done to achieve this result.” This morning, Freedom Archives adds: “Many thanks to all those that contacted the Bureau of Prisons on his behalf.”
In one of countless calls for support coming from those who honor this great man for his political, community and religious leadership, the Bay View explained in a post by the Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition 10 days ago: “Imam Jamil has suffered under brutal conditions for many years in solitary confinement in a federal facility known as United States Penitentiary Administrative Maximum Facility (ADX) in Florence, Colorado, far from his home in Georgia. It is a dreaded place sometimes called the Guantanamo of the Rockies.
“Imam Jamil has been recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, Multiple Myeloma, cancer of the plasma cells. His family and supporters are calling for his immediate transfer to a federal medical center – either at Butner, N.C., or Rochester, Minn. – that can give him the best care for this particular rare cancer.”
Sister Karima described the severity of his condition: “1) Imam Jamil has had a dental problem for more than a year, which resulted in swollen jaws, broken teeth and the inability to swallow; 2) He lost 29 pounds over a three-week period; 3) His legs, feet and ankles have been swollen; and 4) He went through a two-week period where he could not get out of his bed except for two times a day.”
Today we know that our prayers and appeals have been answered. The family asks that all supporters send cards and letters to speed his recovery to his new address: Jamil Al-Amin, 99974-555, FMC Butner, P.O. Box 1600, Butner, NC 27509. Note that musical cards are not allowed at FMC Butner.

“Hard work certainly produces the desired results. Allah is Most Merciful,” Sister Karima wrote yesterday. “The struggle continues.”
“On behalf of Imam Jamil, his thanks and salaams for all that each and every one of you do,” wrote Luqman Jahmi Abdullah-ibn, leader of the campaign that has recruited thousands to actively support Imam Jamil, in a post this morning. Signatures are still needed on his petition HERE.
