San Francisco – Amid a community celebration, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department broke ground Oct. 16 on a project that will transform Shoreview Park in the Bayview into a well-lit, accessible oasis for children to play and families to gather.
The $3 million renovation, funded mainly through federal and state grants, will include a children’s play area; a picnic area with grills and a shade trellis; a community garden; new landscaping, irrigation and lighting; outdoor fitness equipment; new seating; and small plazas connected by an accessible pathway. The renovation will be complete in summer 2020.
State Board of Equalization Chair Malia M. Cohen has supported the project since her tenure as District 10 supervisor.
“This highly anticipated park improvement project is a showcase of what our community can do when we work together to improve our parks,” said Cohen. “This beautiful open space with its new playground and picnic area will enable our families to enjoy a little slice of the great outdoors while in the city.”
“I’m excited about the groundbreaking of Shoreview Park,” said San Francisco Supervisor Shamann Walton, who grew up in the Bayview, and now represents the neighborhood. “This renovation has been a long time coming and we continue to be elated about the improvements to our park. Open space and parks represent so much for community and we will continue to improve our parks in the Bayview.”
Rec and Park staff met with the Bayview community to inform their design of the renovated park.
“The feedback from Shoreview Park neighbors was clear,” said San Francisco Recreation and Park Department General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “They wanted a safe, family-friendly park that retains its natural beauty while offering spaces where people of all ages could socialize, exercise and hold celebrations.”
The .85 acre property, located at 1 Lilian St., was constructed by the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency in 1979 to serve residents of the newly constructed Shoreview Apartments, a subsidized housing complex with 156 housing units. In the early 2000s, the park fell into disrepair.
In 2012, the Redevelopment Agency dissolved. In 2017, the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure transferred Shoreline Park to the Recreation and Park Department. Since it assumed control of the property, Rec and Park removed the fence around the existing play area, cleaned the sand, repaired the irrigation system and constructed new picnic tables.
The renovation project received a $1.96 million Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It also received a $625,108 California Urban Greening Grant from the California Natural Resources Agency. The Recreation and Park Commission also granted the project $300,000 from the Rec and Park Department’s Open Space Contingency reserves for play structures.
