Solutions for Women: Empowering women through means, unity, sisterhood and solving problems

by Andria Bagwell, Solutions for Women

Solutions for Women was founded in 2012, beginning as a network of women friends seeking additional therapeutic support to maintain their lives in recovery. In 2012, the same founding members – Shannon Wise, Alisea Wesley-Clark, Deborah Turner, Denise Lamb, Natra Williams, Sharon Thrower, Jackie Lane, Moinette Harris, Delicia Cunningham and Vera Pittman – incorporated as a non-profit organization and began free support groups for women in the San Francisco Bayview Hunters Point district.

Our mission is to support and connect women to resources, encourage emotional wellness and promote education. The Solutions for Women philosophy is based on three principles:

  • Personal Empowerment
  • Creating Support Systems
  • Developing Life Skills

At Solutions, we believe knowledge is power – and so is personal wisdom.  We support this idea by ensuring that our staff, volunteers and participants share skills, opportunities and know-how so that collectively, everyone is each other’s teacher.

At Solutions, “experience is the best teacher.” We teach what we know and use what we’ve been through to help empower ourselves and other women. Our approach encourages group and peer support.

We have been hosting our free women’s group for over eight years now. Women are welcome to join us on Zoom every Tuesday night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Join with the meeting link here: Meeting ID: 211 052 282. Passcode: 711010.

This is an updated list of regular meetings through the Positive Directions Equals Change recovery organization.

We further believe that “no matter how efficient, smart or independent we happen to think ourselves to be, at some point in our lives, we may run into a ‘brick wall,’ or a particular problem that our intelligence or experience cannot handle for us. We can fake it, avoid it or blunder through it, but a solution to help us through our problem is to get additional support from another strong woman who has walked that way before, a similar situation, and has gained wisdom from the experience and can help empower another woman.”

Therefore: “We have to walk the road of life together.” So, damn the problem – what’s the solution? We are Solutions for Women, empowering ourselves, knowing the sky is our limit.
