On Thursday, Feb. 10, Trader Joe’s workers in Daly City were told by upper management to take down their hand made and bought Black History Month decorations. This message was sent from the regional manager.

The manager actually wanted the decor taken down during store hours. Luckily, the Daly City store manager made the decision to wait until they were closed.

Workers were shocked and angry. One worker said: “How are you going to take down the decor during the actual month of celebration? The reason given was something like, Trader Joe’s is not going to celebrate events that do not have product tied to it.”

Later on that same evening, the Lunar New Year decor was also taken down.

After the George Floyd murder and protests last year, TJ’s stated in a company bulletin that they are aiming for 25 percent of our new products to be Black or Brown owned. They could have featured those products for Black History Months.
