Oakland, Calif. – Despite strong outcry from the public, within a time frame of two weeks, the Oakland School Board voted to close or consolidate five schools at the end of this school year and six more at the end of next school year.

Despite this decision, parents, teachers, staff and students are continuing to speak out and organize, demanding no cuts or closures, especially in OUSD’s most marginalized communities.

In response to proposed school closures, there will be a rally and march on Saturday, March 26, at 11:00 a.m., beginning at La Escuelita at 1050 Second Avenue. La Escuelita is one of five schools that will be affected by closures this school year.

After a rally featuring speakers from the community, participants will march north on Lakeshore Avenue around Lake Merritt starting at 12:00 p.m. Marchers are expected to arrive at Oakland City Hall at 2:30 p.m., where a second rally will take place. The event will conclude at 4:00 p.m.

The upcoming march and rallies are the latest in an ongoing series of actions organized by Oakland families, staff and students fighting against school closures. The most recent march in East Oakland on March 5, 2022, drew hundreds of participants.
