Africans Deserve Reparations! ‘Cause Black Lives Matter!

Blessings of Imani (faith) beloved, brilliant, bold, brave and beautiful G-o-ds, Elders, Sis-Stars, Bro-Stars and youthful revolutionaries!

May our Most High Divine Mother-Father Creator of and in All – and incredible Ancients and Ancestors from past millennia, yesteryears and, literally, yesterday – find you and (y)our extended family thriving and in healing spirit, loving every life and seeking righteous MA’AT.

We greet you from the unceded, occupied sacred home-lands of the OHLONE Indigenous nations – named San Francisco Bay Area, Calif., by the brutal European colonizers, robbers and settlers of the usa. Amen. Asé.

Since i have your attention for a moment: Please assist our fabulous San Francisco Bay View newspaper. We continue to hold on by just a thread, with the most dedicated staff and volunteers. Please make a contribution in any amount.

It’s easy. Just go to sfbayview.com/donate or call us at 415-671-0789, or mail a check or money order to 4917 Third Street, San Francisco, CA 94124. With gratitude and love. Amen. Asé.

Queen-Linda-and-Dorothy-Burnham-in-2019, Beware of the hype from the Big-Time Gangsters!, Culture Currents
Our continuing commemoration of International Women’s Month all year includes this extra special 107th sacred birth year greetings on March 22, 2022, to our beloved and incredible leader, activist, organizer, writer, painter and Queen Mother Dorothy Burnham. Mama Dorothy also raised four successful children – Claudia, Margaret, Linda and Charles – after the passing of her husband LOUIS BURNHAM, one of the key initiators of our original “We Charge Genocide” Campaign to the United Nations in 1951. Since the 1930s, Mama Dorothy has been on the front lines for justice: as an activist in her New York City communities; a professor in the City University of New York (CUNY) system; a leader in the early organizing of the New York State Teachers Union, now New York State United Teachers, NYSUT; contributor to Freedom Ways Magazine and other publications; a wise leader in campaigns to Free the Scottsboro 9 – unjust jailing and convictions of young Black men and boys in 1930s Alabama – to free Mumia Abu-Jamal, Leonard Peltier and all Political Prisoners today. We feel so honored to know, love and appreciate the incredible wisdom, sacrifices, bravery and numerous contributions to humanity by Mama Dorothy. Amen. Asé. – Photo: Baba Jahahara

Honoring a few of our new Ancestors

We honor the recent spiritual transformation of one of our best friends ever, REGINALD “Big Reggie” HILL. We were class-mates for many years, team-mates on our five-time indoor and outdoor state champion track teams and successful winning football teams.

Big Reggie was one of my solid “protectors,” both on the field and in the streets. He and i kept communicating while attending universities in different parts of the country and as we grew into adults. Big Reggie will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and community. Amen. Asé.

Our great ASKIA MUHAMMAD is a powerful humanitarian, journalist, photographer and poet who served African people worldwide. Elder Askia – European enslavement name Charles K. Moreland Jr. – attended San Jose State and spent his early career at Newsweek magazine.

14th Street in downtown Oakland, between Broadway and Lake Merritt, is now officially CHAUNCEY BAILEY Way. It is the area where our fellow journalist worked, walked and ultimately was murdered, near Alice Street. Now, it’s time to add recognition for our official Black Art Movement Business District (BAMBD), which the city council agreed would extend from the West Oakland bottoms all the way to Lake Merritt. Amen. Asé. – Photo: Baba Jahahara

After joining the Nation of Islam under the leadership of Ancestor Minister ELIJAH MUHAMMAD, he became an editor of the then Muhammad Speaks newspaper. Later, he continued his mentoring of others in the revived NOI under Minister Louis Farrakhan and the The Final Call international weekly.

In addition, he had an insightful talk show for over four decades on WPFW and Pacifica Radio in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia areas, was a commentator for a quarter century on NPR’s “All Things Considered” and writer for numerous newspapers around the usa and world. His brilliant work, incredible leadership and generous spirit will be remembered forever. Amen. Asé.

Queen Mother LINDA DAILS is a solid rock for many of us here in Oakland. She fully assisted our Harriet Tubman Health Conductors and #HealthIsTheNewBlack commUNITY efforts through our Bay Area Black United Fund. And, she encouraged many of our youth, artistic and literary projects. Amen. Asé.

JESSE DOUGLASS “DOUG” ALLEN-TAYLOR is a civil rights worker with Dr. MARTIN LUTHER KING’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference. After relocating to the Bay Area, he served as an activist, journalist, novelist and mentor to younger generations. His commentaries appeared in a number of publications including the Berkeley Daily Planet, East Bay Express, Oakland Post and even this paper, our San Francisco Bay View. Amen. Asé.

Mr. PERVIS “The Blues Man” SPANN lived an incredible, accomplished life. He went from picking cotton as a share-cropper in Mississippi to owning his own radio stations in Chicago and Memphis. Mr. Spann was incredibly creative, as a music promoter and manager – with acts like B.B. KING, the Jackson 5, Chaka Khan and others.

Queen Mother Terrie Odabi and Band belt some sho-nuff blues at OPCM at the California Hotel. What is so amazing is this incredible woman performed just a few days after she and her husband, the great artist Stephen Bruce, witnessed their beautiful young daughter, CHANEL SELESTOK, join our Ancestors. Amen. Asé. – Photo: Baba Jahahara

It was he who coined such monikers as “The Voice of the Negro” for his WVON station to the “Queen of Soul” for great ARETHA FRANKLIN and many more. He also owned several nightclubs, including the long-running Burning Spear.

Foremost for me, Mr. Spann, and especially his daughter Melody, also provided precious air-time to our local artists as well as budding movements – from civil rights to human rights, local and national political campaigns, grass-roots housing and anti-police terrorism, anti-apartheid in Chicago and South Africa, to our demands for humanity towards those incarcerated, early Reparations movements and more. Big Ups and salutes to Mr. Pervis Spann for his great life and generous support over many decades! Amen. Asé.

Long live the spirit, legacies and numerous contributions of these new and all our incredible Ancients and Ancestors. Asé. Asé. Asé-O!

Beware of the hype from the Big-Time Gangsters!

The Big-Time Gangsters never cease! Naw, i’m not talkin’ ‘bout Andre “Dr. Dre” Young and Calvin “Snoop Dogg” Broadus, who now owns Death Row Records – though we are encouraging him to honor his late Queen Mother BEVERLY BROADUS GREEN TATE by re-naming the label to sumthin’ like Life and Love Enterprises.

They recently performed and increased their record sales and street-cred, along with other well-known artists and dozens of young brothers doing the C-Walk, during the recent corporate for-profit commercial-thon – that also managed to squeeze in the NFL billionaires’ final football game of the season.

Nor am i referring to the fictional Corleone family’s rise in becoming one of the top mafia organizations in New York, the usa and the Italian diaspora. The steady stream of promotions and corporate media is certainly expanding with this being 50 years since the release of The Godfather film in 1972.

i’m focusing on the biggest gangsters of all! The ones that are at the forefront of ruling and ruining our planet. They represent some of the largest corporations and financiers in the world – like Exxon Mobil, Chevron, Walmart, JPMorgan Chase, Amazon, the weapons and prison industries, etc.

Their overall goal is to make profits and control more of our world, our labor, our rights and resources – hell, even our minds – to make ever higher profits. Though the main individual beneficiaries are not always seen or heard from publicly, their negative influences continue to grow by the day.

Carrying out their profits-at-all-cost mandates are the bought-and-paid-for politicians and media. They are represented in the usa by the corrupt leadership of the democratic and republican parties and by the major network and cable TV along with the internet and social media barons.

Today, with their allies, which include some former “enemies,” these Big-Time Gangsters are leading us into what might be described as – you’ve heard this before – The War to End All Wars!

By surrounding and encircling Russia, the usa-European-NATO gangsters have literally pushed the Kremlin into a corner. And, as any good martial artist would inform you: If your opponent’s force you into a corner, your only option is to fight your way out – by any means necessary.

While the Big-Time Gangsters focus our attention at present only towards Kiev and Odessa, they or their proxies – Saudi Arabia and the apartheid-imperialist state of isreal and others – continue to bomb, attack, burn and starve Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela and other nations.

Now, please hear me. I and we are not taking sides regarding Ukraine. i’m not for the Ukrainian fascist-gangsters or the Russian state-oligarch-imperialist gangsters, nor for the giant usa-European-NATO corporate-imperialist gangsters. They are all war criminals!

In short, i’m against gangsterism and a promoter of truth, justice and peace through MA’AT. Like many other spiritual people, i am appalled by the destruction of life occurring in Ukraine. As a Pan-Africanist and internationalist for all my adult life, i honor, respect and have worked for a full and better life for Africans and all people as well as our relations in the animal and plant worlds.

But, while the Big-Time Gangsters are trying to focus our attention at present only towards Kiev and Odessa, they continue to bomb or have their proxies – like Saudi Arabia and the apartheid-imperialist state of isreal and others – attack, burn and starve Yemen, Palestine, Syria, Iraq, Haiti, Cuba, Venezuela and other nations.

These gangsters, now led by Biden – who wants to bring 100,000 “white” Ukraine refugees to the usa while deporting desperate Black and Brown people seeking refuge from gangster state violence and impoverishment initiated by the usa and European gangsters – continue to terrorize our African continent and Indigenous Turtle Island – the so-called “americas” – as well as destroying PachaMama, or, Mother Earth, over the past half-millennia.

Don’t fall for the “hype,” Brothers and Sisters. We must stand against every act of gangsterism, be it local or global, and for MA’AT. More to come. Amen. Asé.

Asante Sana (many thanks) to our members, friends and allies of our N’COBRA (National Coalition of Blacks for Reparations in America) who continue to advocate for and do outreach throughout our communities to advance our sacred mission. We invite you and your organization’s membership and participation in building our efforts, locally and (inter)nationally. Amen. Asé.

We also want to shout-out the City of Berkeley for recently moving forward its proposal for Reparations. We strongly encourage Black residents of that city, past and present, to get involved in the important process to help right the many wrongs. Reach our N’COBRA c/o ncobrawest@gmail.com or www.ncobraonline.org.

With gratitude to so many organizations, activists, residents and BART riders, we were able to overturn that awful injustice.

Free them all! Amen. Asé. Please recognize the 68th sacred birthday of our beloved leader, writer and commentator Mumia Abu-Jamal, on April 24, 2022. Visit the website of our Jericho Amnesty Movement to learn more about Baba Mumia and the situations of our many other long-suffering and brave warriors for justice as well as how you can best support their righteous release and restitution at thejerichomovement.com. You can also visit the Spirit of Mandela efforts at spiritofmandela.org/news.

Again, we encourage you to review and consider signing and sharing our campaign to add THOMAS L. BERKLEY’s name to our 19th Street Oakland BART station. View and sign our petition here. Also view and sign our petition “Change the Name of the ‘white’ House” here.

Ain’t no stopping The Post! We are saddened at the break-in, robbery and destruction of the offices of the Oakland Post and non-profit OCCUR in the Greenlining Institute’s 360 Center in downtown Oakland. We know that our Elder, friend and distinguished publisher, Paul Cobb, will marshal his staff and our commUNITY to address this crisis as we have in previous years. Amen. Asé.

Asante Sana (many thanks) to Bay Area residents who stepped up to support our dear Queen Lateefah Simon, the only person of African ancestry on the elected Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) board of directors! Without due process, she was temporarily “removed” from her position by the general manager, Bob Powers.

Queen Lateefah is a Bay Area native, veteran social activist, brave single mother as well as widow of our beloved KEVIN “K-Dub” WESTON – a key contributor to our Bay View for many years – produces grandly with a physical disability and is a daily BART rider.

With gratitude to so many organizations, activists, residents and BART riders, we were able to overturn that awful injustice. Please stay tuned as we will be closely monitoring developments. Amen. Asé.

Continue to take (y)our righteous steps, knowing our divine will do the rest. And, walk in the Power of Imani (faith) on each and every day. Amen-RA Hotep! Asé.
