The 13-page letter from Concerned Black Employees to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to specify experiences of racism at CARB – widespread, routine and systemic – and shared, as well, with CARB’s staff, may provide the incentive to engage action towards introspection and change at the agency.

Community and labor advocates rallied on Friday, April 20, 2018, at the San Francisco Potrero Hill Health Center to call for an end to the privatization of the center by Department of Public Health Director Barbara Garcia and also the retaliation against the center’s worker Cheryl Thornton, who is a member of SEIU 1021. Community members are angry that the clinic, which was founded after a long struggle, is being destroyed by city privatizers.

An African American man filed a lawsuit against his employer, Bay Bridge contractor Adams & Smith, Inc., for racial discrimination and retaliation just a little over a week after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The complaint cited incidents in which a foreman lowered a hangman’s noose in front of plaintiff James H. Brown and a co-worker told him to wear the rope around his neck.
