Asm. Sydney Kamlager-Dove pushing law to end slavery in California’s prisons

ACA 3: The California Abolition Act, introduced by Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager-Dove and written in collaboration with imprisoned humanitarian activist Samuel Brown and his wife Jamilia Land, is the bold, essential next step in ending, what Kamlager-Dove calls ‘modern day slavery’ in California by striking the conditional language from the California State Constitution.

In one voice, rising from the cells of long term solitary confinement, echoed in the dormitories and cell blocks from Virginia to Oregon, we prisoners across the United States vow to finally end slavery in 2016. On Sept. 9 of 2016, we will begin an action to shut down prisons all across this country. We will not only demand the end to prison slavery, we will end it ourselves by ceasing to be slaves.

Pattern of practice: Centuries of racist oppression culminating in mass incarceration

After winning their freedom in the bloodiest conflict in U.S. history, Blacks were in many cases and places denied basic human, civil and political rights, literally forcing New Afrikans back into slavery by denying them a right to life. Over the years the government declared and waged war on the New Afrikan communities - war on unemployed "vagrants,' war on crime, war on drugs, war on gangs - culminating in mass incarceration.
