It takes a ComeUnity to heal from COVID – and cancer

A lifetime spent focused on her own survival and that of so many others in the world of viruses called poverty, police terror, incarceration, racism, classism and isolation in this stolen land, Lisa ‘Tiny’ Gray-Garcia describes navigating the additional onslaught of COVID-19, and then cancer on top of her own COVID-19 infection, testing her very core to trust in this new challenge to survival.

The Southeast Food Access Food Guardians, through the Healthy Eating Active Living Zone initiative funded by Kaiser Permanente, work with small businesses to increase access to fresh produce and healthy food for the Bayview community in an attempt to level the playing field for all Bayview residents. The Food Guardians hope to work with Bob’s or other small stores in the near future, if funding allows.

“The 16th Strike,” a documentary in progress, is directed and produced by T Alika Hickman with videographer Danny Russo. Hickman, the young survivor of a stroke and two brain aneurysms, is a Hip Hop artist with Krip Hop Nation – artists with disabilities – as well as a mother, activist, author and poet. She is raising funds to complete the film.

Healthy food, our privilege and right

The Bayview is one of the biggest neighborhoods in San Francisco yet has a severe lack of healthy food resources. The presence of healthy food in their community shouldn't belong only to people who can “afford” it.
