Prisons in some states are withholding newspapers from inmates amid a strike against prison conditions and billions of dollars worth of prison labor. The passing of the 13th Amendment in 1865 formally abolished slavery, but with a stipulation that enabled plantation owners to use prisoners as a replacement for the lost labor. As a group called the Free Alabama Movement rallied for a Sept. 9 labor strike in spring, prison authorities across the country began clamping down on news and information in ways that the ACLU says may be in violation of the First Amendment.

The African Hebrew Israelite community has launched a protest movement in recent weeks seeking to learn the truth about the untimely demise of community member Toveet Radcliffe, the first African American to die while serving in the Israel Defense Forces. Rejecting the Israeli army’s ruling that no one other than the 19-year-old Radcliffe was involved in her own death, members of the community have launched a campaign to pressure the IDF to reopen the case.

Inner City Youth’s Yellow Bus musical convoy left San Francisco’s youth center, traveling through Napa and the Wine Country scenic route to beautiful Clearlake on May 17-19. Twenty-two young people, eight adults and four little folks actively participated; Keith Perry videotaped. On Saturday, May 18, at 9 p.m., ICY performers made their debut at Andre Williams’ Silk’s Bar and Grill.
