The distance learning experiment is on. Black August 2020 will be the first school year in history when public education in the United States went completely digital. Parents are learning to monitor their youth for five to six hours a day while they complete assignments and learn lessons entirely on video screens, while local governments continue to unfold the new system.
Frustrated parent: “So what is it that teachers want? Is this just for more pay?” Teacher: “The district is sitting on $30,000,000 and there are times teachers don’t even have paper and toner for the printers. We don’t have paper towels in the staff lounge. Classrooms don’t have textbooks.”
Attendance across the district was down to 3 percent on Day 2 of the Oakland Teacher Strike. If we were calculating grades, 3 percent would be a super F. OUSD gets an F-. Their attempts at sabotage were futile!
Early Tuesday morning, the 18th day of the Lakeview Elementary Sit-In and 12th day of the People’s School, the OUSD police and other police forces raided the encampment and school. The People's School will continue, and a community-labor alliance and picket sanctioned by the Alameda Labor Council will block the move-in of administrative offices at Lakeview.
