Longtime ILWU Local 10 President Cleophas Williams mourned

Cleophas Williams, 93, of Oakland, California, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2016. He was born June 12, 1923, to John Henry and Bertha Williams in Camden, Arkansas. He attended Booker T. Washington High School in Texarkana, Arkansas, and college in Pine Bluff. After school in 1942, Cleophas joined the army where he was granted an honorable discharge. In 1944, after his move to California, he was hired at the International Longshore and Warehouse Union.

New Orleans land grab: Addressing the ‘elephant’ in the city 10 years after Hurricane Katrina

As we approach the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, let’s not ignore the “elephant” in New Orleans, notwithstanding the pressure to do just that. The elephant in our city is the rampant land grab displacing predominantly African American residents to the outskirts of the city, where public safety, reliable transit, nearby schools, accessible job opportunities and neighborhood amenities are lacking.

‘Vigilante on the Loose’: Black filmmakers put Overtown back on Front Street

“Vigilante on the Loose” is based on a true story about a community plagued with past injustice. This time they chose to stand their ground. Filmed on location in Miami, Florida, the film was produced by Vision Entertainment Group and directed by Timothy Hodges. The once thriving Black section of Miami known as Overtown is virtually destroyed after so-called urban renewal.

Dr. King and the 1955-1956 Montgomery bus boycott

Although America’s Declaration of Independence and Constitution are premised on the principles of democracy, the historical treatment of America’s citizens of color is replete with racial dichotomies. Today’s youth need to know that Dr. King was only 25 when he began to fight back with the year-long Montgomery bus boycott.
