Save Marcus Books, soul of San Francisco, oldest Black book store in US!

June 15, 2013

Marcus Book Store, at 1712 Fillmore St., San Francisco, is packed with knowledge it has purveyed since 1960, for 53 years. Now the oldest Black book store in the country has been ordered out. After strong turnouts Sunday at St. Nicholas Church, where the Sweises are deacon and subdeacon, and at the meeting today, the decision is that Marcus Books will not be moved, not now anyway. Come to the press conference at the store Saturday, June 22, 12-3 p.m. Spread the word! “When folks begin to attack our cultural institutions, they attack our very existence,” says Ed Donaldson. This is “an assault on this community,” says Rev. Arnold Townsend.

TKO! Dawson demolished at the Oracle in Andre Ward’s Oakland

September 11, 2012

When Andre Ward stood on the ropes and raised his arms in victory after demolishing Chad Dawson, I was reminded of a similar scene when a young Cassius Clay stood next to the ropes with a raised fist after demolishing “Big Bear” Sonny Liston, and said: “I shook up the world. I’m the greatest.” Both tend to beat their opponents psychologically before they get into the ring.

AAU Tae Kwon Do bronze medalist back in the Bay Area

August 9, 2012

Because of all of my supporters, I had a chance to compete in the 2012 Amateur Athletic Union Tae Kwon Do National Championships held July 2-7 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I want to say many thanks to all who helped me realize my competition goal, for without your support, I would not have made it.

Fly Benzo is free, so why is Mendell Plaza a no Fly zone?

May 6, 2012

DeBray “Fly Benzo” Carpenter. He was busted on Oct. 18, 2011, by two of SFPD’s finest, John Norment and Joshua Fry, for (gasp!) participating in a community organized rally while playing a boom box in Mendell Plaza in the heart of Bayview Hunters Point. For speaking out against police brutality, especially the SFPD murder of Kenneth Harding last July, he was brutally arrested, tried and now is barred from Mendell Plaza by order of Judge Jerome T. Benson.
