Even if imagined in its most reformed condition, the U.S.’s corrupt carceral system driven by capitalism and the manipulations of racist police, DAs, courts and lawyers with the intent to incarcerate by the thousands, and by any means possible, men and women who are Black, Brown, Indigenous and/or poor, and who are by the thousands, innocent.

Imagine you were framed again by prison gang officers using a tattoo you got as a child and a symbol in a birthday card to “validate” you as a “prison gang associate” and label you “worst of the worst” and placed in segregation in a Security Housing Unit, or SHU, for years on end. That is what happened to my childhood best friend and husband, Robbie Riva.

The right wing bullies at Fox News – Glenn Beck and his ilk – are going after a man known for years of progressive work in the Bay Area: Van Jones. Van’s real crime? He’s the triple threat: He’s Black, he’s effective and he is empowering the people in this country who have the least resources.
