Freedom and Movement Center celebrates its first anniversary Aug. 31

On Saturday, Aug. 31, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., come to the Freedom and Movement Center, 4400 Market St. at 44th in North Oakland. Join LSPC (Legal Services for Prisoners With Children) and All of Us or None for a celebration of community on the first anniversary of the opening of the center.

At Legal Services for Prisoners with Children’s 35th Anniversary Celebration on Oct. 19, headlined by Dr. Angela Y. Davis and Michelle Alexander, I noticed immediately the “logo,” a phoenix rising from the ashes, the theme for California Coalition for Women Prisoners’ 15th Anniversary celebration of the Fire Inside two years ago. All of Us or None is 10 years old now, and LSPC at 35 is the parent of CCWP.

I would like to wish all the fathers a blessed and happy Fathers’ Day 2012. It is a hard time to be a parent of a youngster, not to mention an adolescent or youth. The challenges are great, in direct proportion to the rewards. I’d like to congratulate the young fathers who are stepping up and participating in their children’s lives, especially when society equates parenting with one’s largess or paycheck.
