Mayor London N. Breed, along with City Administrator Naomi M. Kelly, have announced the San Francisco Department of Technology’s Fiber to Housing program has received national recognition for its service to low-income San Franciscans.

The Charlotte Maxwell Clinic (CMC) has been providing free integrative cancer care to low-income Bay Area women since 1991. The clinic recently moved from its previous location to an historic bank building located on “Pill Hill” across from Sutter Hospital in Oakland.

All the ingredients of human bondage and denigration which characterize Anglo treatment of minority peoples in the United States are also present in Oakland, California. A study of Oakland’s socio-economic situation demonstrates, as the Kerner Report and many other similar queries have done throughout the country, that the poor are cut off dramatically from the middle and upper classes.

I was raised by several generations of labor organizers, and in every labor dispute my side is easily chosen. I don’t cross picket lines, and I always stand with the workers against their bosses. With the recent layoffs at KPFA, it’s terrible to see people losing their jobs, but this is not union busting by any stretch of the imagination.
