The rest of the world recognizes the corrupt brutality that exists in U.S. prisons spurning increasing doubt about our claims to be the exalted “land of the free.” It’s unfathomable that we know how those incarcerated are being treated and yet ignore the inhumanity they suffer as if it were not our business. This is the tipping point. Our inaction is not a choice, if we are to remain human.

As tortuous as the U.S. prison system is to its residents, it is criminally so to the children of incarcerated parents, and their caretakers. Herein lies a wealth of inspiring and uplifting ways to proactively heal the daily wounds of parenting, family unity and staying human while incarcerated.

The alarming thing about this story is that the teller is living it today, yet, as we read, it keeps sounding like something we’ve read about from the past, and it is – it’s the past right now with the same brutalities on the same plantations with the new slaves. The past is now and slavery was never abolished.

Even if imagined in its most reformed condition, the U.S.’s corrupt carceral system driven by capitalism and the manipulations of racist police, DAs, courts and lawyers with the intent to incarcerate by the thousands, and by any means possible, men and women who are Black, Brown, Indigenous and/or poor, and who are by the thousands, innocent.
