Betraying the legacy of Chauncey Bailey

Everything about Chauncey Bailey's life and work spoke of his devotion to the Black community. Yet the Chauncey Bailey Project appears to have veered far off the course that Chauncey was taking.

In this 2001 TV interview with New California Media (now New America Media) host Emil Guillermo, Chauncey Bailey says the Black press "can't be...

Free Dee Allen

We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with student, activist and poet Lamont (Dee) Allen, who was singled out and arrested while participating in the July 30 counter-demonstration against the Minuteman Project. Allen's only "crime" is having the courage, as a Black man, to stand up against an aspiring lynch mob.

Obama’s election-eve message to Black people: ‘You have done this’

In perhaps the most candid direct message to Black people since his Democratic nomination, then Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama, on election eve Monday, credited Black voters for his historic political rise, promising to make a difference in their lives if elected.

What are the chances?

On Thursday, May 31, 2007, my first-born daughter, Jasmine, had the amazing opportunity of having lunch with Barack Obama. The next morning, it was Johnathan's turn. And this week, the door of the SUV my son Michael and his friends were chasing on their skate boards swung open, and Obama yelled, "Come on, dudes, get in!"

Wanda’s Picks for Nov. 7

I think I'm still in shock. Imagine, 200 years after chattel slavery was legally abolished in the United States, we have a Black man elected to this nation's highest office: Barack Hussein Obama, president elect, this nation's 44th president as of Jan. 20, 2009.

What the world owes Congo

Following "Break the Silence" Congo Week, Kambale Musavuli urges the global community, and African-Americans in particular, to revitalize international attention on the Congo as a means of shedding light on the ongoing conflict and harnessing the potential for strong advocacy relationships.

I don’t know this America … but I’m most happy to meet it

I grew up with the picture on the left. That's the America that lynched Black soldiers in their uniforms after World War II. It's the America I was taught. It's the America unfortunately I've lived through. It's the America that killed the Dreamer. But on Nov. 4, 2008, I was most happy to actually meet the America that chose to make the picture on the right its new dawn. I don't know this America. I didn't think it was possible.

All things are possible

Read Barack Obama's victory speech, which begins: "If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer." Watch the speech by clicking on Videos under Topics to your left.

An Obama victory foreseen in Africa

"We are looking forward to a great day to celebrate," said Malik Obama, the candidate's step-brother, dismissing any suggestion that his relative might not become the first Black U.S. president. "We are not considering that possibility. I am not," he said.

An Ode to Barack Obama for President of the United States of America

We will begin to rewrite the story of this land, erasing the exclusion and isolation that waved at us mockingly as an estranged flag was tossed and tussled by torrential winds. Perhaps now those stripes and bright stars will symbolize a dream in which we all can stake a claim.

Hey, Hey, Nancy!

A journalistic critique of the Chauncey Bailey Project

The Chauncey Bailey Project was never about honoring and continuing the work of the late journalist Chauncey Wendell Bailey Jr. and answering questions regarding his death, as it claims on its website. The project and the Oakland police seem to have more of a lynch mob mentality in their investigation.

Bringing democracy to Amerikkka

With Black youth on the front lines this election season, along with all youth plus older Blacks and other people of color, the struggle for real democracy can finally claim victory in the U.S. Masses of new voters have registered and are already lining up to vote wherever early voting is available, as it is here in the Bay Area.
